Indigenous Land Acknowledgement
Theta Alpha Psi acknowledges the University of Michigan’s land origin as being from a land grant from the Anishinaabek, the Three Fires People: the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Boodewadomi as well as Meskwahkiasahina (Fox), Peoria and Wyandot. The land was transferred in 1817, 10 years after the acquisition of the land was formalized by the 1807 Treaty of Detroit. We further acknowledge that our university and organization stand, like almost all property in the United States, on lands that have been obtained from indigenous peoples in unconscionable ways. This land has benefitted not only our organization, but also the greater community in which we operate.
As an organization that heavily values equity and justice, we recognize that while we cannot change the past, we can still work to understand the history of our land and take this knowledge with us as we work together to heal and create a more just future.
This acknowledgement was based on the SEAS and City of Ann Arbor land acknowledgements.
